paying phone bill

Hi, my mom just passed, she had small amount of cash in joint account with me. No assets as she lived with me in my home. Since it was joint account, do I have to pay her phone bill and any other bills that come my way?

Paying phone bill

When an account is joint, both people on the account are equally responsible for paying it, so yes, you must pay the phone bill. However, you are not personally obligated to pay any of your deceased mother's individual debts -- debts that are in her name only. You are only obligated to pay the accounts that you shared with her.

For more information on the debts of a deceased person, I suggest you read this deceased person’s debt FAQ that we wrote.
