When i was married we lived in Nebraska and we bought a water system. In the divorce it was stated my husband was legally responsible for it. now I'm getting papers in the mail stating there is a judgement against me in Iowa for this? cCm they go to different states and get a judgement against you? And even though its in a legal document that in the divorce my ex is legally responsible for this bill. Am i still legally responsible?

Unfortunately a divorce agreement does not modify the original contract with the creditor. When two people sign a contract they agree to pay the debt. The fact that they divorce doesn't change that.

And yes, it is often possible to sue consumers in the state in which they live rather than the state of the original contract. It is also possible to have a judgment transferred to the state in which the consumer lives.

We can't comment on whether everything in this situation was done legally, though. For that you'd need an attorney who could look over the facts and circumstances of your individual situation.
