Health Bill filed under wrong name two years ago

by Trish

My husband had a surgical procedure in March of 2009. Our Insurance paid all but $24.48 for which we were billed by the Doctor's office and paid. In September of 2009 I was reviewing our claim info on BCBS website and noticed that they actually had the surgery listed under my infant son who shares the same name as his dad. I contacted the insurance company and they said they would void the listing under my son and re-key it under my husband. I didn't think anything else about it until yesterday when we received a bill from the Doctor's office stating we still owe $147.93. There is a written note on the bill stating "Balance subject to collections if not paid". It lists the debt as being 0-30 days old when the surgery actually took place in March of 2009, over 2 years ago. Can they really do this??

It sounds to me like the doctor's office made an accounting error. I would call the office and try to get the problem straightened out. I assume you have all of the documentation proving what your insurance company paid and what you and your husband paid out of pocket, in case you need it.

Based on what you shared in your question, it does not appear that the error the hospital made has anything to do with the bill you received from the doctor. However, if I did not understand your question, please write back and clarify exactly what you are asking.
