The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the federal law that governs debt collection, gives your creditor the option of suing you where you live now or where you first incurred your debt. We don't know what state you live in, but it's possible that your state may have its own debt collection law that says something different. Also, some types of contracts indicate where a lawsuit will be filed in the event that one of the parties to the contract breaches the agreement.
Not only can the attorney help you sort out this issue, but also, if you are about to be sued, you need legal representation. Furthermore, if you are sued in a state other than the one where you reside, the attorney can help you find a qualified lawyer in that other state.
