Having wages garnished by govt for back taxes by: Mary & Gerri
If you did not pay your federal taxes when they were due and you did not make arrangements with the IRS to resolve your tax debt, the federal government is legally entitled to garnish your wages until you have paid the full amount of what you owe plus all of the late fees and interest that will be accruing as long as you owe money to the IRS.
Before the garnishments begin however, the IRS will send you a series of notices giving you an opportunity to either pay what you owe in full or to take care of your debt, maybe through a payment plan.
Another way that the IRS may collect its money from you is to take any tax refunds you may be entitled to. Bottom line, the IRS has extraordinary collection powers and is never hesitant to use them.
If you believe that the IRS is about to begin garnishing your wages and you can't afford to pay the full amount of your tax debt in order to avoid garnishment, go to the IRS web site immediately to find out if you qualify for paying for your debt over time, http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq/0,,id=199555,00.html
