Social Security, IRA, and debt collectors

Neal,

Thanks for submitting your debt collection question on our Q&A page.

In most cases, and for most types of debt (though not all), income from Social Security and retirement funds are protected from creditors. There is an easy way to find out for sure if you are "judgment proof," and that's to get a a free consultation with a bankruptcy attorney. It will probably give you some peace of mind to know what they can and cannot do to collect from you, as well as to help you understand how to respond to their calls and collection notices.
