Utah is a separate property state, which means that one spouse is not legally liable for the debts of the other. Therefore, your wife's unpaid debt should not show up in your credit history, especially since you say that you did not sign any paperwork agreeing to be responsible.

If I were you, I would formally dispute the information with
whichever credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) are reporting it. You can file your dispute online at their web sites.

If you are unable to get the information removed, then you should contact a consumer law attorney in your area who helps consumers resolve credit record problems. Your first appointment should be free.
