 How a civil lawsuit begin in PA

A civil lawsuit officially begins in PA with the filing of a Complaint and the payment of a filing fee. ( A Summons and a Complaint are the same thing but PA refers to this court document as a Complaint.) Then the defendant in the lawsuit must be served or officially notified of the lawsuit and given the opportunity to file an Answer with the court.

If you are considering filing a lawsuit or if you have been sued, I recommend that you consult with an attorney. If you want to know more about how a lawsuit in PA works, consider contacting the court clerk with the court where you will be filing the lawsuit or where the lawsuit against you was filed.
