Unfortunately Debbie, the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act gives you the right to request that a debt collector validate a debt that he wants you to pay and obligates the collector to respond in writing to your request. However, it's silent in regard to exactly what the collector must include in his response.

Therefore, our best advice if you are unhappy with the information the collector provided you, is to contact the collector and ask for a more detailed accounting. However, there is no guarantee that you will get the additional information you want and the law does not obligate the collector to provide it to you.

Put your request for additional information in writing and send it to the collector via certified mail with a return receipt requested.
If the collector does not respond to your request or you are unhappy with what the collector does provide, you may want to consult with a consumer law attorney in your area who helps consumers resolve debt collection problems.
