Unpaid Student Loan Debt

by Thomas C.
(Raleigh, NC)

I attended Central Michigan University from '97-'00. In this time I received student loans. How do I find out the exact amounts I received and the date I received them? How do I find out how much interest has accrued? How can I find out how much I have paid towards it, including tax refunds. I need to know all of this information and who to contact in order to take care of this since I have not paid on my student loans in nearly 8 years.

Also how long do student loans appear on your credit report?

Thomas,

I am glad you are trying to straighten this out. Delinquent student loans often carry very high interest charges and collection fees. Your debt is no doubt much larger now than when you started.

I'd recommend you start by getting the book The Student Loan Scam: The Most Oppressive Debt in U.S. History - and How We Can Fight Back

It's going to be important for you to understand the lay of the land as you try to navigate getting back on your feet. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Good luck and please come back to tell us how things go for you!
