Statute of limitations in New York
by: Gerri

Thanks for submitting your debt collection question on our Q&A page.

According to the sources I researched, the statute of limitations for debts in New York is typically six years. If you have not paid on a debt for six years then it may be too old for the collector to successfully sue you.

If you confirm that's the case, you can send the debt collector a cease and desist letter and ask it not to contact you again.

Please keep in mind we are not attorneys and do not provide legal advice.

I would really encourage you to read the first chapter of Debt Collection Answers online for free so you have an overview of your rights when dealing with this debt collector.
