Stopped Check Fees

by Tanya
(layton ut)

The collection agency is trying to add $2300 or 3x the check amount in fees due to the fact the debt is a stopped payment on a check. I was told they can only do that if i had bounced the check. Is this accurate? I am in Utah so what does Utah Law state about stopped payments on a check

Utah law on stopped check fees

Thanks for submitting your debt collection question on our Q&A page.

Unfortunately, Tanya, I am going to have to refer you to either your state attorney general's office or a consumer law attorney for advice on your issue. You really want to make sure you are getting accurate advice, so you can proceed accordingly, and that means talking with someone who knows your state debt collection laws inside and out.
