settlement with collection agency

by Candy
(San Fernando Valley)

I want to settle an old debt, I was wondering if I could sent a check with the settlement amount. and if the collection agency cash's my check would they be agreeing with my terms?

Reply from DebtCollectionAnswers.com:

While that is a common tactic that is often promoted as a way to deal with debt collectors, it doesn't necessarily work. The collection agency may not be bound by the terms you spell out on the check. It's better for you to negotiate with them and get an agreement in writing before you pay.

You may want to listen to our debt settlement podcasts for tips on negotiating.
