Property code violations

by Jean
(Sacramento)

I recently filed bankruptcy and surrendered a rental property. The bank foreclosed on the property. The city is attempting to collect for code violations and administrative fees because homeless people kept breaking in to the property while it was in my name. A code enforcement official told me violations are associated with the property and once it was out of my name I would not have to pay but I am being harassed by the city to pay. I was laid off work and have no income other than unemployment. What should I do?

Jean:

I am not a bankruptcy attorney so I do not feel comfortable answering your question nor can I give you legal advice. Therefore, I recommend that you contact your attorney and ask him what to do about your situation. If you do not have an attorney, you should talk with one right away, bankruptcy attorney.
