I've just received a call from Portfolio Recovery about a debt back in 1985. Saying I owe over 3,000 on Mastercard. I don't even remember having a Mastercard back in 1985. Isn't it illegal to collect on a debt that old?

That debt sounds very old. It also sounds like they may be going after the wrong person.. Ask them to send you something in writing. This is your right under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Then you can respond with a letter telling them not to contact you again, either because you don't believe you owe a debt or because the debt is too old. You can learn more about sending a cease and desist letter here.

In addition, this debt should not appear on your credit reports after all those years. But it might be a good idea for you to get copies of your credit reports to at least make sure this hasn't been inaccurately reported.
