Payment arrangement

I have set up a monthly payment arrangment with a debt collection agency to pay down some debt on student loans. For a period of time, that sufficed and I was no longer being contacted in any form or fashion by a debt collection agency. I'm still making monthly payments but am now being contacted by another debt collection agency. What gives?

I am not sure what is going on but it may be that your student loan debt has been turned over to a new debt collection agency. So, I would call the agency to whom you have been making payments to find out if it still has your debt.

Also, the new debt collection agency that is contacting you is legally obligated to provide you with written information about the debt it wants you to pay. Have you received that information and is it trying to collect the same debt the other agency has been collecting from you? If both agencies are trying to collect the same debt, I recommend that you ask a consumer law attorney in your area to help you sort things out.

Finally, if you sent payments to the old agency after your debt was assigned to the new agency, be sure to find out what happened to those payments. Again, you may need an attorney's help to make that determination.
