medical collection account

It's not clear to me whether you had a formal arrangement to pay the health care provider $175 a month or whether you were just paying what you could afford to pay. While the health care provider is generally not required to accept what you can afford, they shouldn't as a matter of good business practice, send you to collections if you had an agreement with them to pay less.

Have you contacted the original medical provider and asked them for help with this? If so, what did they say? If not, that would be my first recommendation.

Also keep in mind that the debt collector is required by law to follow the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in its dealings with you, so I would recommend you at least read the first chapter of Debt Collection Answers online for free and download a copy if our Free Debt Collection Worksheet so you have it to handy to take notes any time you talk with the debt collector.
