Past due account with west florida electric.

I have a past due account with West Florida Electric. They are threatening to take me to court over a $600 bill. We no longer use them as our service provider. Can they legally do this?

Past due electric bill -- lawsuit threatened
by: Mary

Thanks for submitting your debt collection question on our Q&A page.

Yes, the electric company is entitled to sue you for the money that you owe it. Furthermore, if the company wins the lawsuit and gets a judgment against you, the judgment will do serious damage to your credit scores. Therefore, I strongly urge you to either pay Florida Electric what you owe in one lump sum or to contact the utility and try to work out a plan you can afford for paying your past due bill over time.

Good luck resolving your problem.
