Paid settlement amount

(Massachusetts)

I received a settlement offer from Afni, Inc, for an old telephone/ ISP bill (statute of limitations has not passed). I paid the amount requested, which was less than I had hoped to settle for. should I expect this to go away now, or will they just sell the rest of the debt to another company?

Thank you.

Thanks for submitting your debt collection question on our Q&A page.

It's hard for me to tell whether the company considers your payment a full settlement. It's safe to assume that unless you have something in writing that says the amount you paid settles the debt in full, they may sell the balance to another collector. But that may not be the case, so you'll just have to see what happens.

Make sure you keep a copy of all your correspondence - including proof of the payment you made - in a file you can get to if this does come up again.
