Yes, you can be sent to collections if you and the medical provider did not agree to the amount you are paying each month. You may also be sent to collections if you have an agreement, but you are not living up it.

If you cannot afford to pay the full amount of your medical debt, you should try to negotiate a payment plan you can afford. Get the terms of the agreement in writing before you begin paying on it. Another option may be to settle the debt -- pay it off for less than the total amount that you owe on it. Generally, however, you must pay the amount of the settlement in a lump sum immediately after you agree on the amount.
