I just found out I have a default judgment from 2005

by sonja
(maryland)

I recently discovered I have a default judgment in virginia from 2005 for under $2,000. I am guessing it is a credit card debt that I had when I was married to ex-husband, I was the primary cardholder on all our cards. I currently live in Maryland and want to know the best way to get this settled, I cant afford to pay it off in a lump sum. Is it possible to get a payment plan set up. I shows up on my credit as a derogatory item

settling a judgment

Sonja,

It is a good idea to try to take care of this because you don't want to risk the judgement creditor trying to go after your income or your assets.

Judgments can be often be settled (though it's still better to try to resolve them before they get to that point.)

Have you been in contact with the company that holds the judgment? See if there is contact information on your credit report. Just keep in mind, however, that by contacting them you could be opening a can of worms. They may decide to get more aggressive about trying to collect from you. For that reason, it would probably be a good idea to at least get a free consultation with a bankruptcy attorney so you can find out what they can and cannot do to collect from you at this point.

Good luck!
