How to get my mom to stop putting name on bills

by Anna

My mom has been secretly putting my name on very important bills and have been paying them late or have not been paying them at all. Currently at 21, she has been doing this since i was 16. Is there any way to fix my credit with this and to make her stop? I confronted her about it and she shrugs it off as if it wasn't a big deal.

This is a huge deal. What your mom is doing is illegal. It is called identity theft. It is ruining your credit history and will jeopardize your ability to get credit in the future. In addition, if she doesn't pay you may be sued for those debts.

She has left you in a very bad position personally as well. In order to get it to stop and to clear your name, you need to report the identity theft. That means filing a police report.

If you take that step you will be able to place a security freeze on your credit report. The freeze will not allow anyone to access your credit without you supplying a personal identification number. If you are a victim of id theft, then the security freeze is free. If not, there is a fee. We would recommend you do that either way.

In the meantime, you'll have to decide how to handle this. We recommend you read this article about the issue:
