If your debt was turned over to a collection agency recently, I would imagine that you will be hearing from a collector with that company very soon. However if you want to get in touch with the collection agency before it contacts you, my best suggestion is to contact the creditor that turned your debt over to the collection agency to see if you can find out the name and contact information for the agency.
If the creditor won't give you the information you need or if you are unable to speak with anyone who can help you, you will have to wait to be contacted by the collection agency. In the meantime, it would be wise to get informed about your debt collection rights and how to protect yourself when you are contacted by a debt collector, especially because there are many incidences of debt collectors who violate the law when they are dealing with consumers. Also, consumers who do not understand their rights often say and do things when they are dealing with debt collectors that make their financial situations worse.
A great way to educate yourself about your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is to purchase a copy of the e-book I wrote with Gerri Detweiler by going to http://www.debtcollectionanswers.com/Stop-Debt-Collectors.html. You can read the first chapter of Debt Collection Answers online for free.
