Pensions are often safe from creditors. However, that can vary by state and depending on the type of pension you receive. Your best bet is to consult a bankruptcy attorney who can tell you specifically whether your pension is safe.

Keep in mind that, even if it is safe, if you deposit your pension checks into an account where other non-exempt funds are also deposited, you could find yourself in a situation where the collector goes after the entire account.

Also keep in mind that in most cases collectors must first take you to court and get a judgment before going after your assets. But, again, it's good to talk with an attorney to get some specific advice.
