Garnished my mothers bank acct for my debt

by Stefanie
(Oxford, mi)

About 3 years ago, I became a signer on my mother's account for the sole purpose of being able to pay her bills in the event she became unable. My mothers account was just garnished for an outstanding debt of mine in the amount of $2,000.00. She collects social security and I believe dividends from her mutual funds. There is NO income from me. Can you please advise me what to do as I do not have $2000.00 to give to my mother. Thank you for your time.

Stefanie - We are not sure what you mean when you say you were added as a signer on your Mom's account. Did it become a joint account? If so, then your mother's money may have been put at risk for your debts.

We suggest you consult with a consumer law attorney right away - especially if you have other debts that could put your mother's money at risk.
