Jul 26, 2010, Writer lives in a different debt collection reality
This article about how unfair the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is to debt collectors made me laugh out loud this morning. Does the author live on the same planet I do?? It seems obvious that she has not read the recent reports on debt collector abuses just released by the FTC and the National Consumer Law Center; she must be totally unaware of the ever-increasing number of complaints being filed by consumers with the FTC because debt collectors have run rough shod over their legal rights; and she must not have read any of the countless questions we receive at this web site from consumers who are struggling to deal with debt collectors. Most of these consumers have fallen behind on their debts because of job loss, high medical bills or other difficult life situations, not because they decided to live the high life and can't afford to pay their debts now.
It is becoming clearer and clearer that the FDCPA needs strengthening, not weakening as it seems the writer would like.
