Did your father leave behind a will and designate an executor for his estate? If he did, the executor is the person who needs to resolve the problem you write about. An executor is the official representative of a deceased person's estate, which is all of the assets that person owned at the time of death and all of the debts he or she owed.

If your father did not write a will, then you or someone else need to contact the probate court in the area where he died and ask it to name an administrator for his estate. An administrator has the same powers and responsibilities as an executor. This person should then get in touch with a probate law attorney to find out what to do about the person who claims he or she was buying land from your father.
