Do I Still Owe a Debt if a Debt Buyer Owns It Now?

Yes, you still owe the debt although now you owe the money to the debt buyer rather than to your original creditor. Debt buyers purchase old debts for pennies on the dollar and then try to collect on the debts. A debt buyer is legally entitled to go after you for the money you owe to it, including taking you to court. Debt buyers must comply with all of the terms of the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act however. To educate yourself about your rights under that law, I recommend that you get our ebook Debt Collection Answers. You can read the first chapter of Debt Collection Answers online for free.
