Deceased Husband in Louisiana left a condo in his name

by Maggie
(Mississippi)

I am not co-borrower for the condo. It was a business thing. Our home is another state and he was sent to Louisiana to work and got tired of living in a hotel, so he bought a condo, but we also had a home in our home state, which both of us own. Am I responsible for the condo and his other credit card bills that I am authorized user on, but not co-borrower on any of them?

Reply from DebtCollectionAnswers.com:

Our sincere condolences to you.

Spouses are generally not responsible for their spouse's individual debts unless they cosigned the debt or live in a community property state. Louisiana is a community property state. In addition, since this is a major asset/debt, you really do need to get legal advice about your options, as well as guidance if you decide to dispose of it. We recommend you contact a probate or estate planning attorney in your local area.
