Debts in other countries

(texas)

I am not from the US but live here, am green card holder. If I have debts in my home country, can the debt collector there take my house here in the US if I don't pay? Can they go after my husband if I don't own any property here but he does?

Reply from DebtCollectionAnswers.com: Unfortunately, we don't know the answer to your question. It seems unlikely that an overseas debt collector will be able to go after your property in the U.S., but you'll need to check with a consumer law attorney. As for your husband's home, creditors generally cannot go after a spouse's individual property unless the live in a community property state, and even then, generally only for debts incurred after the marriage.
