Debt collector says I owe $34,414. . .Creditor says $9,592

by Sharon
(Northern California)

According to my Experian credit report, a credit card account was "charged off" and $28,385 was "written off". "Past Due" was $9,592. I just received a bill from a debt collector saying I owe $34,414. What gives?

Reply from DebtCollectionAnswers.com:

Sharon,

The difference between the past due amount and the charged off amount is not unusual. You may have been behind by $9592 when they charged off the entire balance due.

Now it's been placed for collection and the collection agency has added fees plus interest. Those additional charges are governed by state law, and we can't tell you whether they have illegally inflated the debt after it was charged off.

Does the above explanation help though?
