Constant Calling!

by Brenda
(Charlotte,nc)

Unfortunately my husband has collected several hospital debts which of course he never pays or very rarely. I, on the other hand have hospital debts I pay $20 a month for several months. My question is: what do I do or say when they call knowing he can't or won't pay anyone. I've tried talking, reasoning with, and yes nagging and screaming to no avail. Please help with any suggestions, thanks.

constant collection calls

Brenda,

Thanks for submitting your debt collection question on our Q&A page.

If you really want the collection calls to stop, you'll need to ask your husband to send the collection agencies a cease-and-desist letter. Basically, he'll ask them to stop contacting him and they must do so. However, they can still take legal action to collect. I would recommend you read our page that discusses
cease and desist letter
and share the information with him.

The other alternative, would be for you to get a cell phone, give that number out to your contacts, and stop answering the phone that he's getting calls on.

If he really has no intention of paying these bills, then he may want to set up a free consultation with a bankruptcy attorney. Even if you don't want to file, he may be able to file and discharged his own debts without involving you. It sounds like it's worth checking into.
