Collection Agency's reporting false information

by Sue
(Texas, Henderson)

When a collection agency buys a debt, can they legally report on your credit report that it is a new debt with a new charge off debt. I have stuff that is 10 yrs that was just reported with in the last 2 yrs as new debt. Can they legally do this? It is all credit card debt.

old collections reported on credit report

Thanks for submitting your debt collection question on our Q&A page.

No, Sue, collection agencies may not report information that is older than 7 1/2 years from the date you first fell behind with the original creditor. That's true whether or not the debt was paid.

Make sure you have saved copies of each of your credit reports from the three major credit reporting agencies. Then read our instructions on how to dispute credit report errors.
