CAN MICHIGAN UTILITY COMPANY COLLECT OLD DEBT FROM SPOUSE-NOT BEEN REPORTED TO COLLECTION AGENCIES?

by Terry
(Michigan)

My son was newly married. Utility bills are in wife's name. The 1st bill included amt. due from my son - 5 years ago. This debt is not reported to any credit agency and son does not recall owing debt.

debt with utility company
by: Gerri

If your son did owe the utility bill, then the company may be able to tack it onto their new joint account. But the real question is whether he owes it. I would encourage him to try to get the utility company to provide him with something that will show that it is his bill - and not someone else's. If it turns out he does owe it, then he can try to work out a payment plan.

I am sorry I can't offer more specific advice here since he is dealing directly with the creditor, not a debt collector.
