Can a collection agency call for a bill from 20 years ago

by Christina
(Peoria, Az Us)

A collection agency has sent me a letter asking payment for an account that was already paid in 1994. As I've stated the account was paid and over 15 years ago and therefore do not have any proof on my end. They also will not provide any signed documents. What to do?

Christine,

Please at least read the first chapter of Debt Collection Answers online for free so you have an overview of your rights. This debt sounds like it's way too old, and they are required to verify it in writing if you dispute it. If they continue to hassle you over this zombie debt, you can get free legal advice about your rights.
