Being harrassed by debt collectors

by Barbie
(Anderson, SC )

I bought a house out of foreclosure and now the debt collectors are calling me for the former owner's debts. How can I report multiple debt collectors who have called me at least once a week and two or three times a day, if I just pick up the phone & hang up to stop the ring, for the past year and 1/2? They are trying to collect on the prior owners of the house that I bought out of foreclosure from a bank in Oct. 2008.

They back into my address and get my phone #, will not accept that I am not the person they are looking for, that those people have not occupied this house since 2007, and I never met them.

I want a way to report them for harassment so when I return calls (if they show up on my caller I.D) I have some "teeth" to make them stop calling me.

collection calls for the wrong person
by: Gerri

Barbie,

Thanks for submitting your debt collection question on our Q&A page.

Ugh! What a mess. I have a bit of an idea of what you are going through because my 11-year-old is getting numerous collection calls on her new cell phone for the person who previously had her phone number. Your situation sounds even worse, though.

We've been hearing enough complaints from people getting collection calls for debts they don't owe, that we decided to put up a page with tips for dealing with debt collection for the wrong person. I hope you find it useful, and would really appreciate it if you would follow up with us using the comments link below, to see if this advice works.

Good luck!!
