can my bank account be garnished by a debt collector without bring me to court first ? I live in Kansas, and my bank has denied me any of the funds in my account. The only thing I know about this is that I received a paper in the mail, stating that a unifund ccr partners has gotten a judgement against me , and I dont even know what it's for.

A debt collector cannot have your bank account garnished without first suing you in court and winning a judgment against you. And, when you are sued, you are supposed to receive official notification of the lawsuit from the court so that you can respond to the lawsuit and show up in court to defend yourself. However, there have been instances of consumers not being properly notified and of the debt collectors who sued them getting default judgments against them as a result. This may be what has happened to you and if that is the case, then the debt collector broke the law.
