Are These Collection Fees Legal?

by Kimberly
(New Mexico, USA)

I have a debt with a health club and they sent me to collections. The agency is charging me the $400 that I owe, $83.00 in interest and $200 in collection fees. Is it legal to charge all those different fees?

Reply from DebtCollectionAnswers.com:

It's possible yes, but we can't say for certain. It depends on the contract signed with the gym plus state collection laws. (Unfortunately we weren't able to locate specific information about allowable collection costs in your state.)

You may want to check with your state attorney general's office for more details.

And remember, collection accounts can often be negotiated, especially if you can come up with a lump sum. We talk about that in more detail in our free ebook, and recommend you download it here.
