Am I ultimately responsible for my ex's phone bill?

by Paul
(Dodge City, KS)

My ex-wife and I separated 18 months ago(I moved out and never came back) and divorced 9 months ago. The phone bill was in my name and I never closed the account. She got behind on the bill and it went to collections and now I'm receiving letters from the credit agency in charge of the delinquent account. Our divorce decree states that each of us will handle our own household expenses. Am I still responsible for this account even though she was paying the bill every month prior to getting behind?

Am I ultimately responsible for my ex's phone bill?

I am afraid that you probably are responsible for your ex's unpaid phone bill because the account is still in your name. However, I would confirm that fact with your divorce attorney as I am not an attorney. Also, to protect yourself from further problems, I would get the account out of your name as soon as you can. It should be in the name of your ex now.
