Am I responsible for my mom's apt fix and clean bill after she passed away?

by Edward

I lost my mom a couple weeks ago. She has lived by herself for three years in a government senior apartment before she died. Now, the senior apartment manager has asked me(the son) to pay for the apartment cleaning and fixing burned counter top bill. My mom didn't leave any money or asset to me. Am I responsible to pay for the apartment cleaning and fixing burned counter top bill? Thanks.

Student loans after parent passes
by: Jack

If my mother passes and she has loans for me in her name when I was in college who pay those loans after she passes? My dad died four years before her.

If these loans are just in your mother's name, then they will probably not be collectible. It doesn't matter that she used them to help pay for your schooling (provided you did not cosign or guarantee them of course). If she has an estate it is possible the creditor may try to collect from the estate, or they may just be written off as bad debt.

Our condolences for the loss of your mother. We hope you are doing alright.

As for your question, unless you were on your mother's lease, you are not legally obligated to pay to have her former apartment cleaned and for the to repair the burned countertop. Ordinarily, when someone leases an apartment, they put down a security deposit that the landlord uses for such things. If the security deposit does not cover the cost of everything that must be done to an apartment after a tenant leaves, the apartment owner must absorb the additional cost.

So, based on what you wrote in your question, you have no responsibility to your mother's former landlord.
