Account Information on Collection Account

Do I have a legal right to get a copy of current payments on account I'm making payments on?

Reply from DebtCollectionAnswers.com:

Are you talking about a collection account that you are making payments on? There is no requirement in the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act that a collector provide a statement of payments. There is some talk that it should be required. We recommend debtors be sure to keep excellent records of the payments they've made on delinquent debts.

If you think the collector isn't properly crediting your payments, you can either file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC.gov). They won't get involved in your individual dispute but at it will go on record.

You could you can contact a local consumer law attorney with experience in debt collection cases. Find out how to get FREE or low cost legal advice about debt collection from a consumer law attorney here.
