If the debt is not yours, write a letter to the collection agency stating that it is not and asking for the agency to verify in writing that it does belong to you. Make a copy of your letter and send the original via certified mail with a return receipt requested.

You can also send the collector a letter telling him that you don't want to be contacted again about the debt. Once more, make a copy and send your letter via certified mail with a return receipt requested.

If you take these actions and the collection agency continues to pursue you for the money, we suggest that you schedule a FREE consultation with a consumer law attorney so the attorney can advise you about your options.
